Ever been stuck trying to figure out which colors to use in a project?
Maybe you’re working on a presentation or maybe you're exploring your business’s brand identity and have no idea where to begin when it comes to color options.
Wondering if there are specific considerations in choosing one color over another? What are those reasons? Or how about learning about color harmony rules to choose combinations that work well with the base color you want to use? How can you be confident, without any art or design training, in knowing what to choose?
In Chapter 3 of Logo To Go, I talk about Brand Colors, Color Psychology, and Color Theory. In that chapter, I share enough to get you started, but it’s no secret that I could talk for HOURS about the incredible power color holds. There’s so much to know! And wouldn’t it be great to go into each project with just a little bit more of that knowledge so you can choose colors more confidently and intentionally?
In this email, I’m sharing some ways (with some handy FREE resources below ⬇️) you can choose brand colors that work for your business and/or projects. When I say “work,” I mean just that. The colors you choose are selected, intentionally, to literally do a job.
So, how can you know you’re choosing the best colors for your project?
The color selection process is in-depth. It requires more parts than are immediately apparent. 😅 All of which you’ll want to consider to tap into the power that purposeful color selection brings to your visuals. The power to influence engagement, brand recognition, and trustworthiness with your audience is one you won’t want to leave by the wayside.
It’s more than flipping through a Pantone swatch book and selecting an attractive combination. Yes, you could essentially go that route, but you’re leaving SO MUCH untapped influence on the table when you forget to ask some important questions:
• What combinations truly work best to engage and attract your audience? How can you be sure?
• What about color psychology? Is there anything to it?
Clearly, knowing your audience is key. There's much more to learn outside of those questions, but doing the research to get to know who they are, what they like, what they do, and more will help to hone in on the visual language that will speak to and engage them. Investing the time to really get to know who you aim to help with your product or service is imperative and probably the most overlooked step of the design process.
Most treat the visual design process as a standalone... jumping straight into software to execute graphics as a first step. Meanwhile, the way you think about visuals for your business is deeply connected and informed by a comprehensive web of information. Information that you won't want to overlook in decisions like, “what colors should I use for this project?”
It seems like a simple question, but if you dig just a bit deeper into color meanings and psychology, you'll find that seemingly simple question reveals illuminating layers to be explored before a decision is made. Don't pass on the opportunity to utilize the magic that the innate psychological impact color has on our brains. ✨ The ways it's used helps sway choices, perception, and so much more.
"...But Nicola, I don't have the time or funds to do all that research right now - especially on my own. I need to get up and running quickly, so I'm gonna give it a shot and DIY it." I get it. And I support you in that decision. As a strong advocate for people starting their own businesses, I'm invested in providing as much insight as possible to help you succeed.
That’s where the resources I’ve been working on come in. I’m arming you with basic tools and knowledge to make things a bit easier.
So, on the subject of color, I’ve written a two-part series to help familiarize you with some of the essentials.
In part one, I cover the important role color plays in your branding. In it, I touch on brand recognition, color psychology, how we are influenced by color functionally and emotionally, and how color is used in your branding. That post culminates with an assessment you can take to see if you’re on the right track.
In part two, I cover more technical aspects such as a basic overview of color theory, harmony, temperature, and association.
The world of color is vast and there’s a lot to uncover. It takes years of training and execution to make informed decisions – especially the sort that will affect your business’s bottom line. So, without spending a ton of time or investment into training, these articles are a great place to begin. They should help you feel more confident in choosing colors, more intentionally, for just about any visual project you’re working on.
If those two articles have helped, you’ll enjoy Logo To Go.
Grab a copy and give it a read (the first chapter is available for free). It provides the guidance and insight you'll need to move through the process of developing and DIYing your visual brand identity.
